Most customers in Sri Lanka now look for businesses on their phones before they call or visit. If your business does not show up, or shows up with an old phone number, they simply choose someone else. The good news is that getting found does not require a big budget. It mostly requires accurate, consistent information in the right places.
1. Decide on your “official” business details
Before you create or update any listing, write down the exact details you will use everywhere:
- Name: the name customers know you by, ideally matching your business registration.
- Address: written the same way every time, including the town and district.
- Phone numbers: one main number that is always answered, and a WhatsApp number if you use it for customers.
- Opening hours, website and email.
Search engines compare the information they find about you across different websites. When your name, address and phone number match everywhere, they are more confident you are a real, active business and are more likely to show you in local results.
2. Claim your Google Business Profile
A free Google Business Profile is what appears on Google Maps and in the box beside search results. Create or claim yours, complete every section, choose the most accurate category, add photos of your premises and products, and keep your hours up to date, including public holidays. Answer questions and reply to reviews from the same dashboard.
3. List your business in trusted directories
A business directory listing helps in two ways. Customers browsing a directory can find you directly, and each accurate listing is another signal to search engines that your business exists where you say it does. Choose directories that are relevant to Sri Lanka and that check listings rather than accepting anything. On BizGrid.lk, for example, every listing is reviewed before it is published and is shown on industry and district pages such as the Colombo business directory.
When you fill in a directory profile:
- use exactly the same details you decided on in step 1;
- write a description that says what you do, for whom and where (our guide on writing a business profile that gets enquiries has a template);
- pick the most specific category and add keywords customers actually search for;
- add your logo and link your website and social media pages.
4. Have a simple website, even a one-page one
A website you control is the place customers and search engines trust most for your details. It does not need to be complicated. One page with what you offer, your location with a map, opening hours, contact buttons and a few photos is enough to start. Make sure it loads quickly and works well on a mobile phone, since that is how most people will see it.
5. Ask happy customers for reviews
Reviews influence both customers and search results. After a job goes well, ask the customer if they would mind leaving a short review, and make it easy by sending the link. Reply politely to every review, including critical ones. A calm, helpful reply to a complaint often builds more trust than a perfect score.
6. Keep everything up to date
Outdated information costs you customers. Put a reminder in your calendar every three months to check your Google profile, directory listings, website and social pages. Update them immediately if you move, change phone numbers or change your hours.
7. Post useful updates
Regular posts show that your business is active. Share new products, seasonal offers or short tips related to your trade. On BizGrid.lk you can publish offers and updates from your dashboard, and they appear on the Offers & updates page with a link to your profile.
A 30-minute checklist

- Check your Google Business Profile matches them.
- Add or update your listing on BizGrid.lk and any other directories you use.
- Make sure your website and Facebook page show the same details.
